Surrounded by some the most beautiful beaches in the southern hemisphere, Kaitaia is only a short drive away from our spectacular seaside. Some places to visit are as follows:
90 Mile Beach, Kaitaia
Just 14kms west from Kaitaia township, located at the souther end of the stunning world famous 90 Mile Beach. This unspoilt sandy beach curves its way up the Far North’s western shoreline almost to Cape Reinga. Popular local pastimes include surfcasting, sunbathing, surfing, land yachting, walking, fishing, shellfish gathering, horse and dune riding and of course relaxing.

Shipwreck Bay, Ahipara
Shipwreck Bay was aptly named with the sinking of many ships including the Favourite which is still visible in the low tide surf. Above Shipwreck Bay you’ll find the Ahipara Gumfields Historic reserve and see relics of the gumdigger days and the remnants of ancient kauri forests. Shipwreck Bay is also famous for its surfing breaks.
Awanui
A peaceful country spot from which to enjoy attractions of the Far North. Situated 8km north of Kaitaia at the convergence of the main eastern and western routes through Northland, it is a direct drive north from here to Cape Reinga. A petrol station, laundromat, bakery, cafe on the Awanui river, dairies and takeaways, Awanui has all you need to stock up before your trip to the top of the North.
Waipapakauri, 90 Mile Beach
On ramp access to Ninety Mile Beach, Waipapkauri is a situated 6kms north of Awanui on the way to Cape Reinga. Home of the 90 Mile Beach Lion Red Snapper Classic which has been hosted there for the past 26 years where 1,000s of locals and tourists flock to be part of this huge competition.
Houhora Harbour
40kms north of Kaitaia, Houhora boasts some of the best fishing in the country. Houhora Harbour is unique because it contains a fast flowing deep water channel which brings sizeable snapper, john dory, kingfish, kahawai, trevally and baitfish right to the wharf providing brilliant safe fishing all year round. Many excellent rock and beach fishing locations on both the East and West Coasts.
Rarawa Beach
Enjoy the magnificent sparkling waters and silica sands at Rarawa. The pure quartz sand is amazing and the swells on the beach that accommodate an annual surfing competition. Rarawa known for its timeless unspoilt desolate beauty, untouched except for the occasional fisherman or tourist. Nearby Henderson Bay is a shell collector’s paradise with magical views to Karikari and the Parengarenga Harbour.
Tapotupotu Bay
Tapotupotu Bay is a small sandy bay located not far from the Cape itself. There is a DOC camping ground there with fresh water and toilet facilities. There are also mosquitoe’s reputed to be big enough to carry off small children. The water looks pretty enticing but be wary! There are very strong and currents and rips.
